FAQs

You’ll find our most commonly asked questions and answers below. If you still have questions feel free to reach out to us here.

Does this work for reluctant writers?

Building confidence is what we do best and we have an excellent track record in supporting reluctant writers. However, please bear in mind that building your child’s confidence could take one lesson, a couple of weeks, or several months. It all depends on how and why your child has lost their confidence, and the journey we need to go on in order to build it back up again. If you’d like to discuss the individual needs of your child with us, please get in touch.

How many students are in a group?

Our groups are six students maximum, which means that all students receive individual support and teacher feedback. Our younger age groups are capped at 4 or 5 students and we will run a class with three children.

Can I trial a lesson?

We offer a free trial lesson for all group sessions (one per family). For 1:1 tuition, a paid trial lesson is advised before booking regular lessons, to ensure that the teacher is a good fit for your child.

Do you follow the National Curriculum?

Our teachers are all UK qualified and are highly experienced in delivering the National Curriculum teaching and learning for writing. However, we also have the freedom to go off on creative and imaginative tangents that follow the interests of individual students!

Do you understand home education?

Hannah has been working with the home education and world schooling communities for eight years now, so the answer is yes! We have students who attend from all over the world and are currently supporting over 50 home educated children and their families, mainly in the UK and UAE, but also in Egypt, Portugal, the US, Bali and Thailand!

Do you set homework?

For group classes our teachers post optional homework tasks after each lesson, and additional resources that may be useful to a virtual classroom. Homework is always optional as we know that some families don’t have the time or prefer not to complete work outside of lessons.

Do you mark the work?

If your child is attending a small group session, they will receive a written progress report three times a year: in late November/early December, in March and again at the end of May. These progress reports will include things your child has been doing really well (lots of those!) as well as a couple of areas they need to work on next. You can see a sample progress report here.

What is the duration of a session?

Small group lessons are 55 minutes long. For 1:1 tuition, sessions can be 45 minutes or 1 hour long.

What if we need to miss a session?

It’s not a problem if your child needs to miss a group session for whatever reason: exciting home ed day trip, dentist appointment or illness. We record the session to the Zoom cloud and send you a link and password to watch at your leisure! This link is only shared with an absent student and the recording is deleted after 7 days.

Does my child need to keep their camera on?

Safeguarding is extremely important to us, so we do ask all students to keep their cameras on wherever possible. If your child is anxious, we ask to see them on screen for a few seconds, to check that it’s definitely a young person in attendance – this could be 1:1 before the class starts if they prefer. After that they can have cameras off and communicate via the chat if that makes them feel more comfortable. You can read our full Safeguarding Policy here.

Is small group tuition effective?

Small groups are very effective! Our skilled teachers can support several children at once, ensuring they all get lots of opportunities to ask and answer questions, or to read their work aloud. The evidence shows that small group tuition is effective too (up to a group of six).

Do you provide 1:1 tuition?

We have very limited availability for 1:1 tuition with our expert teachers. If you would like to enquire about 1:1 or 1:2 tuition for your child, please fill in our enquiry form here. Some families book 1:1 tuition to build initial confidence, before transitioning their child to a small group class.

Can I cancel a lesson?

It’s not possible to cancel a group lesson – a recording will be provided if your child cannot attend their lesson for any reason. For 1:1 or 1:2 tuition, you will need to give 24 hours’ notice to cancel a lesson, otherwise the full fee will be charged. We allow one cancellation with no charge per academic term.

How do I make payment?

If you live in the UK, you can pay for your child’s lessons via direct debit with GoCardless, or by setting up standing order. We also require a deposit of one month’s fees for group lessons. If you live outside of the UK, you can pay with Stripe subscription or with Wise.

Do you offer discounts?

We have a very popular friend referral scheme! If you refer another parent to our lessons and they book a half term block or more, we will give you one free group lesson for your child, or a £15 discount on 1:1 tuition.

Which time zones does this work for?

Our small Creative Writing groups work really well for students in the UK, Europe and Asia. Some of our classes are also suitable for home schooling students in the US.
